"The Secret Life of Salvador Dali", by Salvador Dali, translated by Haakon M. Chevalier, in a stated second printing, published by Dial Press in 1942. This copy is inscribed "Pour Joseph de Lange", dated 1943, and signed by Salvador Dali on the half title page. The right front free endpaper bears the prior owner's name (de Lange) and date in pencil. According to The New York Times, Joseph de Lange was an architect and a leader in Jewish activities in Antwerp, Belgium. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, and designed synagogues, churches and homes. When the Germans invaded Belgium in 1940, Mr. de Lange fled to France, then Cuba, and eventually to New York, where he resided until his nation's liberation, after which he returned home. De Lange was a former president of the Jewish Community in Antwerp and served as secretary of the Antwerp Federation of Jewish Charity. He also served as a trustee of the Royal Museum of Antwerp.
